IMO reaches agreement on regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping

In April, the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 83) agreed on draft measures to price greenhouse gas emissions from shipping.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Net-zero Framework will require ships to comply with emissions targets or pay financial penalties for extra emissions.

The discussions at MEPC 83 are part of the broader IMO plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions – refer to the 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships.

There will be an extraordinary meeting of the MEPC in October to further discuss adopting the draft measures.
